Tire Buying Guide
The biggest difference is winter capability. Here is how all-season, all-weather and dedicated winter tires compare.
All-season tires are better thought of as three-season tires with some winter capability. They are designed to work across a broad temperature range, but their rubber tends to become harder in very cold temperatures, reducing traction on snow and ice.
Mild winters with little snow, where warm-weather performance, comfort and tread life are the priority.
All-weather tires are a hybrid between all-season and winter tires. Their compounds and tread patterns are designed to perform better in cold weather, snow and slush while still being suitable for year-round driving.
Drivers who regularly see freezing temperatures and snow but prefer one set of tires year-round without seasonal swaps.
Dedicated winter tires are specifically engineered for cold temperatures, snow and ice. Their winter-focused rubber compounds and tread designs provide the strongest winter traction of the three options.
Regular driving in deep snow, packed snow, icy roads or more severe Canadian winter conditions.
