The hybrid battery recharges automatically while you drive using the engine and regenerative braking -- so there's no need to plug in. A Toyota plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) combines a gasoline engine with a larger battery and electric motor for extended driving range. The battery recharges while you drive, but to unlock the full electric-only range and maximize fuel savings, it should be plugged in at home or at a public charging station. This makes Toyota PHEVs ideal for Ontario drivers who want electric driving for daily commutes with gas backup for longer trips.

A Toyota battery electric vehicle (BEV) runs entirely on power from its rechargeable battery, driving one or more electric motors with zero gasoline use. While regenerative braking recaptures some energy, BEVs need to be plugged into a home charger or public EV charging station for a full recharge. This makes them the best choice for drivers in Ontario looking for all-electric performance and zero-emission driving.

The 2026 Toyota bZ offers up to 460 km of range, depending on trim: about 378 km (XLE FWD), 460 km (XLE AWD with 77 kWh battery), and 430 km (Limited AWD).

The RAV4 Hybrid uses a self-charging battery with 219 hp and ~6.0 L/100 km fuel economy. The RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) adds plug-in capability, up to 60-68 km of electric-only range, and delivers 302 hp with 0-100 km/h in ~6 seconds.

All models include a 120V Level 1 cable for overnight charging. A 240V Level 2 charger cuts time to ~4 hours for Prius Prime and ~2.5 hours for RAV4 Prime. The all-electric Toyota bZ also supports DC fast charging, reaching 10--80% in about 30--40 minutes.

A Toyota electrified vehicle can save hundreds per year in fuel and lower long-term maintenance costs. For example, the Toyota bZ EV costs about $634/year to charge (NRCan estimate), far less than fueling a gas SUV. EVs also skip oil changes and spark plugs, while hybrids use less fuel and reduce brake wear.
